おやしお型潜水艦は、長く踏襲されてきた完全複殻構造・涙滴型艦体を新技術にあわせて根本から設計を見なおした新世代の潜水艦として検討された潜水艦です。水中吸音材と側面アレイ・ソナーという2つの新開発装備の導入が計画の主眼とされた結果、日本で初めて葉巻型艦体と、部分単殻構造を備えた潜水艦として竣工しました。
おやしお型の設計で重視されたのが全般的なステルス化で、艦の中で最も大きな突起物であるセイル外板を傾け、探信音を発振元に戻さないようにすることで探知を避けることを狙っています。またそれに合わせ、新開発の水中吸音材が導入され、外部の音に対して逆位相になるような音を加えることでこれを打ち消すことができ、隠密性は従来の潜水艦に比べ、一層向上しました。

Submarine Oyashio
The Oyashio class submarines were new generation of submarines, a completely double hulled teardrop design using new technology. Their sound absorbing coating and flank sonar array were two newly developed aspects, they were Japan’s first cigar shaped submarines, incorporating many other new pieces of equipment.
An important factor of their design was their stealthiness, one of the biggest protuberances on a submarine is the sail, the oscillation of it in the water can lead to a submarine detection by an enemy. For that reason newly developed sound absorbing coating that creates an opposite phase in the sound, and thus eliminates the sound totally, was developed, creating a quieter submarine a grade above anything built previously.
