日進は、もともとはアルゼンチンがイタリアのアンサルド社に発注した艦でしたがキャンセルとなり、日露の関係悪化により完成間近だった本艦と春日を手に入れようと画策し合った結果、日本が破格の金額を入札したことで日本の購入が決まりました。日本海海戦では、第一戦隊に編入され戦いました。日本海海戦時に高野五十六（後の山本五十六）が少尉候補生として乗り組んでおり、この時に左手の人差指と中指を欠損、左大腿部に重傷を負っています。
作品は、明治38（1905）年5月27日の14時10分頃をイメージして描いたものです。歴史的大勝利のきっかけとして有名な「丁字ターン」の最中にあり、まさにターンを開始した先行艦の春日に続き、回頭地点に突き進んでいるところです。先行する三笠、敷島、富士、朝日の向こうには発砲中のバルチック艦隊を描き込んであります。

First-class Cruiser HIJMS Nisshin 1905
The Nisshin, along with her sister the Kasuga, fought in the battles of the Russo-Japanese war. Originally ordered by Argentina from the Ansaldo company of Italy, when the order was cancelled, due to the deterioration in relations between Japan and Russia, plans were made to acquire this ship and the Kasuga, a tremendous effort was made to raise the funds necessary, and the purchase was completed. In the battle of Tsushima she fought as part of the 1st fleet. At the battle of Tsushima Takano Isoroku (later Yamamoto Isoroku) was aboard as a Lieutenant Cadet, at this time he lost his index finger and middle finger of his left hand, and his left femur was severely injured.

This work shows her on Meiji 38 (1904) May 27th at 14:10. She is engaging in the famous turn that brought the fleet to “Cross the T”, she is following kasha which has begun to turn, she is approaching the turning point. Ahead, Mikasa, Shikishima, Fuji, and Asahi are all firing on the Baltic Fleet.
